Valheim Black Forest Progression: From First Scouting Trip to a Smelting Yard
The Black Forest adds an equipment and logistics stage rather than simply stronger versions of Meadows chores. You need dungeon resources, an ordinary mining tool, a way to process ore and routes that remain usable while carrying heavy material. This guide covers early unmodded progression after Eikthyr and contains resource and dungeon spoilers. Reviewed October 18, 2026, it uses official 1.0.20 context plus the current community wiki. Procedural terrain differs between worlds, so the sequence is more reliable than copied universal coordinates.

Secure the Meadows base before expanding
Keep a functioning repair station, food, Rested and a claimed bed before making the first serious trip. Craft the ordinary early pickaxe using the antler material from Eikthyr. You do not need to move every possession into the forest immediately. Start from a known Meadows approach where you can retreat and return with a repaired tool. Carry a useful weapon and defensive option alongside the pickaxe, since mining is not a complete combat plan. Leave food and spare equipment at the return point so a lost trip can be recovered without rebuilding the whole settlement.
Scout the edge before hauling a large load
Explore a short daylight loop and mark significant discoveries on a map-enabled world. The forest has copper deposits inland and tin along suitable shorelines, with Burial Chambers supplying early Surtling Cores. These are different objectives and need not all be completed in one overloaded outing. Note a route back before travelling deep between hills and trees. A visible resource is not automatically a good first mine if hostile creatures and difficult terrain make every loaded return dangerous. Choose accessibility and repeatability over collecting from the first shiny object you notice.
Enter a Burial Chamber with a prepared exit
Bring appropriate food, repaired combat equipment and room for cores. Inspect the entrance and remember the route back to it while exploring the branches. Deal with manageable groups rather than opening several new directions while already fighting. Close the distance or retreat according to the equipment you brought, and preserve stamina for defense. Surtling Cores are the early objective, so leave when you have secured useful progress and supplies are running low. Do not confuse a troll cave with a Burial Chamber simply because both are dark entrances in the same biome.
Build the processing chain in the right order
Cores enable the kiln and smelter stage. Read the hammer’s current recipes and choose a site with room for fuel, ore and finished output. A charcoal kiln converts suitable wood into coal, while the smelter uses coal to process ore into metal. Do not confuse the construction core with fuel you should keep feeding into the furnace. Place the active structures where smoke can escape and where you can retrieve their output without walking through danger. Keep supporting storage close enough that the production loop is easy to refill, not scattered around an oversized unfinished base.
Gather copper and tin for an actual first batch
Select a reachable deposit, clear immediate enemies and preserve a retreat before mining. Tin is found along appropriate Black Forest shores; copper comes from larger deposits that may extend below the visible surface. Inspect the live inventory weight while gathering because ore fills carrying capacity quickly. Make a small batch that completes a known purpose rather than mining until you can no longer move effectively. Keep enough food and tool durability for the trip home. A repaired pickaxe and a repeatable route are more valuable than abandoning a heavy pile because you ran out of preparation halfway through.
Create bronze at a forge and prioritize utility
Smelting produces copper and tin separately; combining them into bronze is a forge operation. Use the current recipe and reserve raw metal for the station infrastructure itself. A bronze axe unlocks the normal route to finewood from suitable trees, while a cultivator supports farming once the relevant seeds and conditions are available. Those utility gains can support many later trips. You do not have to turn the first metal into a complete armor set immediately. Choose the improvement that solves your current bottleneck and use the remaining material for the next clearly named goal.
Expand food and travel while learning combat
Collect useful seeds and plant resources rather than treating every nonmetal item as clutter. Build farming and cooking capacity as the appropriate tools and stations unlock. Learn to manage the ordinary forest threats in small encounters, and avoid turning a resource trip into an unplanned fight with every large creature you see. Once portals are available, use matching tags and verify the connection before depending on it for recovery. On standard wood-portal rules, restricted ore and metal still need another transport plan; a portal near a mine does not automatically solve every hauling problem.
Prepare for The Elder rather than rushing it
The Black Forest’s boss is the next major progression goal, but the first successful ore load is not a signal that all preparation is finished. Establish dependable food, repair access, useful equipment and a route to the discovered altar. Read the actual offering and fight instructions before summoning. Keep a recovery setup outside the immediate arena and enough reserves to continue after a mistake. If basic mining still results in repeated deaths, improve the routes and equipment first. A stable bronze-age loop makes the next boss and the later Swamp transition much easier to approach deliberately.
Your working checklist
Checkmarks stay in this browser when storage is available. They do not alter your game or connect to your account.
Put it into practice
- Scout and mark accessible copper, tin and a Burial Chamber separately.
- Secure cores, build the fuel and smelting chain, then gather a planned batch.
- Create a forge, combine bronze and prioritize a useful tool or station.
- Improve farming, travel and recovery before preparing The Elder.
Before you finish
- Cores build processing structures; coal is the ordinary smelter fuel.
- A cave entrance is not automatically the dungeon you need.
- Standard portal restrictions still matter when hauling ore.
Common questions
Should I move the whole base into the forest immediately?
No. A known Meadows return point can support initial scouting and small batches while you evaluate the new area.
Why do I have copper and tin but no bronze?
Bronze is combined at a forge; the smelter processes the ores into their separate metal outputs.
What is a useful first bronze investment?
Choose a tool or station that removes a real bottleneck, such as normal finewood access or farming, rather than copying a mandatory full-set order.
