Valheim Bronze Production: Plan Copper, Tin, Coal and the Haul Home
Bronze production has several separate jobs: obtain mining access, collect ore, make coal, smelt the metals, build a forge and combine the bars. Missing one link can leave a large ore pile unusable. This guide gives an original early production route with checked recipes from the current community wiki, reviewed October 18, 2026 in the official 1.0.20 period. It assumes normal unmodded progression; world resource and portal settings can change hauling choices. Read your actual recipe before committing an entire batch.

Name the item before mining the material
Open the desired recipe and write down how much bronze it needs, plus any other materials and station level. A bronze axe, cultivator or weapon can have different requirements and purposes. Starting with a named target prevents the common cycle of mining indefinitely without knowing when enough has been gathered. Include infrastructure in the plan: metal allocated to the forge is not also available for the finished tool. If the recipe is not visible, check whether you have discovered each required material and reached the appropriate station rather than assuming more ore will unlock it automatically.
Secure tools, cores and the production site
Use the ordinary antler-pickaxe route after Eikthyr and gather the Surtling Cores needed for the chosen kiln and smelter setup. Pick a site where repeated loaded returns are practical. A shoreline base can suit later shipping, while a small processing outpost can reduce travel from a distant deposit. Neither is universally best for every procedural world. Provide storage for ore, coal and finished bars, plus repair and food access. Leave space at the output points so the work is convenient to collect. A scenic furnace hidden among obstacles is less useful than an accessible small yard.
Identify copper and tin correctly
Search Black Forest terrain for copper deposits and appropriate shoreline sections for tin. Inspect the deposit label rather than mining every rock that looks similar. Mark useful finds and distinguish a tin route from a copper route. Copper can extend below the visible surface, so a small exposed cap is not necessarily the entire deposit. For the first batch, focus on a workable amount and a safe return rather than excavating a huge pit while hungry. Clear immediate threats and identify how you will climb back out before digging away the terrain that currently serves as your path.
Separate collection from transport capacity
Watch both inventory slots and weight. A bag that still has empty slots can already be too heavy for a comfortable return. Place a temporary storage point if the route supports it, then move batches deliberately. Do not leave the best equipment in a deep, unsafe mine simply to carry one more small stack. A cart can be useful on a prepared route, but steep obstacles and narrow terrain still matter. A boat may suit a coastal run once available. Test the route with a manageable load before filling every container and assuming the journey will remain easy.
Make coal and feed the smelter correctly
The charcoal kiln processes wood into coal. The smelter takes coal as fuel and the relevant ore as material, producing the separate metal output. Check which input interaction you are using instead of clicking at the same opening and wondering why one supply is not accepted. Keep the structures adequately ventilated; smoke-producing equipment can stop when its exhaust cannot clear. A roofed workshop is possible, but an initial outdoor smelting area simplifies the first setup. Refill fuel and ore during safe pauses and store finished bars before they become mixed with unrelated ground drops.
Reserve the forge inputs before combining bronze
Build the forge using the current recipe and make sure the station is usable. Then combine two copper bars and one tin bar for one bronze. For example, a target of six bronze requires twelve copper and six tin for the alloy itself, before adding any copper or other material reserved for the forge and associated infrastructure. This arithmetic describes recipe inputs, not a promise that every ore node yields a fixed amount. Keep tin and copper labelled or separated in storage so an exciting first batch does not accidentally consume material set aside for another required station.
Spend the first batch on a real progression gain
Choose what the item enables. A bronze axe provides ordinary finewood access; a cultivator supports cultivation; a selected weapon may improve a combat limitation you have already identified. Compare those gains with the expense of making several equipment pieces at once. There is no requirement to exhaust every deposit before moving on or to create every bronze item in the catalogue. Keep enough capacity for repair and the next useful project. If you still struggle because food and Rested expire on the hauling route, fix those supporting systems instead of expecting a new metal helmet to solve the entire production loop.
Make the next batch easier than the first
After one successful cycle, improve its slowest link: a rough path, distant coal storage, missing repair access or a dangerous return crossing. On ordinary wood-portal settings, ore and bars cannot simply be carried through, so compare manual hauling, shipping and local processing. World modifiers can change that restriction; state which setting you use when following another guide. Keep a small reserve of nonmetal portal supplies and food where practical. A repeatable modest batch that reaches the forge is better than a much larger theoretical haul stranded behind an unfinished road and a lost tombstone.

Put it into practice
- Choose the target and reserve infrastructure materials separately.
- Collect manageable copper and tin batches from marked accessible deposits.
- Produce coal, smelt each metal and build the forge.
- Combine at the two-to-one bar ratio, craft the target and improve the route bottleneck.
Before you finish
- Two copper and one tin produce one bronze, not three bronze.
- Do not forget copper reserved for the forge itself.
- Check portal settings before planning a teleport-only ore route.
Common questions
Why can I not make bronze directly in the smelter?
The ordinary alloy recipe combines copper and tin bars at a forge. Smelting ore and making the alloy are separate steps.
How much metal is needed for six bronze?
Twelve copper and six tin for the alloy, plus separate infrastructure costs and any other item requirements.
Should I smelt at the mine or at home?
Compare route distance, repairs, safety and portal settings. Neither location is always best in a procedural world.
