Valheim Eikthyr Preparation: Summon the First Boss and Control the Fight
Eikthyr is Valheim’s first main boss and an early test of food, stamina and reading attacks. The fight becomes far more manageable when you prepare the ground and equipment before summoning. This guide covers ordinary unmodded early progression and contains first-boss spoilers. Sources were reviewed October 18, 2026 in the official 1.0.20 period. It does not promise a fixed kill time or assume that damage and difficulty are identical across every world modifier and player group.

Find the altar without starting the fight immediately
At the starting Sacrificial Stones, interact with the small Vegvisir associated with Eikthyr to reveal the nearest altar location on a map-enabled world. Travel there during a prepared scouting trip and inspect the surroundings. The altar is a summoning site, not a reason to begin the encounter the moment you discover it. Identify rocks, slopes, trees and nearby creatures that could interfere with movement. Keep your main house away from the immediate fighting route. A boss drawn into the settlement can make recovery much more difficult than a battle kept in a deliberate open area.
Obtain the required offering and keep a reserve
The community boss entry specifies two Deer Trophies as the offering. Hunt deer with a method your current equipment supports, such as careful sneaking or a crude bow, and collect the actual trophy items rather than assuming meat or hide counts. Do not use a fixed old drop probability to predict exactly how many deer you need; official 1.0.20 changed aspects of trophy drop logic. Store spare materials at home and bring only the offering and equipment you intend to use. Carrying the entire workshop supply into the arena adds avoidable recovery risk.
Repair gear and practise the defensive input
Use your covered workbench to repair equipment, then check the weapon, shield or bow combination you plan to fight with. A basic melee approach and a bow approach are both possible; choose the one whose timing you understand. Practise blocking or dodging ordinary creatures while properly fed before expecting the boss to teach every control at once. Bring a realistic reserve of ammunition if using a bow. Better equipment can help, but a kit you cannot operate with remaining stamina is not ready merely because every item is the highest tier you currently own.
Prepare food, rest and a return point
Eat three different available foods with a useful balance of health and stamina, and refresh Rested shortly before departure. Carry spare servings for a delayed attempt. Establish a sheltered return point at a sensible distance rather than directly beneath the boss’s route, then verify that the bed is actually claimed. Leave recovery food and simple spare equipment there or at the main base. This is preparation for an ordinary mistake, not an assumption that failure is inevitable. A short, fed recovery is much easier than a hungry run from the starting stones while the boss remains active.
Clear a movement loop before offering the trophies
Remove small obstacles that would trap you while backing away, and deal with ordinary nearby enemies before summoning. Do not use all stamina chopping or sprinting immediately before beginning. Choose a loop with room to change direction and avoid deep water or steep drops. Keep enough distance from the bed and storage that a retreat does not lead the fight straight through them. When the area and character are ready, use the offering interaction at the altar and prepare to observe the first attack instead of unloading every action at once.
Read the antlers and lightning instead of chasing damage
Eikthyr’s community entry describes close antler attacks and lightning attacks with different shapes. Watch the wind-up and create space to learn which movement protects you. At close range, use a prepared block or dodge rather than trading repeated hits while the stamina bar empties. For a broader area attack, move out before deciding whether there is time for another strike. A bow lets you attack from range but still consumes stamina and requires a clear route while drawing. Do not hold the draw continuously as you run into obstacles and then discover you have nothing left for defense.
Attack during openings and reset when necessary
Take a small number of deliberate attacks after the boss commits to an action, then preserve enough stamina for its next response. If you take damage, create space and allow recovery rather than trying to win it back with a desperate full combo. Keep ordinary enemies from accumulating around the fight. In a group, avoid everyone drawing the boss through the same narrow obstacle or standing in one shared area attack. If you die, recover the existing equipment with food and a plan before offering more trophies; summoning another boss does not solve the one already threatening the arena.
Collect the rewards and complete the progression step
After the fight, collect the Hard Antlers and Eikthyr Trophy before leaving. The antler material enables the first ordinary pickaxe route into early mining. Return the trophy to the correct Sacrificial Stone and interact with it to unlock the associated Forsaken power. Read how that power is activated in your current controls instead of assuming it is a permanent automatic buff. Repair and restock before entering the Black Forest. Winning the first boss opens options; it does not make the next biome harmless or remove the need for food and a recovery shelter.
Your working checklist
Checkmarks stay in this browser when storage is available. They do not alter your game or connect to your account.
Put it into practice
- Scout the marked altar, clear a movement loop and prepare recovery supplies.
- Repair, eat and rest before using the offering interaction.
- Observe attacks, defend deliberately and attack only during manageable openings.
- Collect antlers and trophy, return the trophy to its stone and prepare the next biome.
Before you finish
- Meat and hide are not substitutes for the two trophy offerings.
- Do not place the only recovery shelter inside the boss’s fighting route.
- Do not resummon before dealing with a boss and equipment already in the area.
Common questions
Do I need metal equipment for Eikthyr?
The ordinary progression reaches this boss before the first pickaxe and bronze production. Prepare a familiar early kit rather than waiting for a later metal tier.
Is the bow mandatory?
No. Ranged and melee approaches can work; choose the one whose defense and stamina timing you understand.
What should I do after winning?
Collect the rewards, mount the trophy at its Sacrificial Stone, repair and prepare for early Black Forest exploration.
